Celebrating 50 Years of Brotherhood: The Legacy of Eta Psi Chapter

The Eta Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is commemorating a milestone that represents not just the passage of time but the enduring legacy of Brotherhood, service, and excellence—the 50th Anniversary of its chartering. This golden year provides an opportunity to reflect on the chapter’s rich history, honor the men who have helped shape its journey, and look ahead to the future that is still being built upon the foundation laid by the chapter’s pioneering Brothers.

Eta Psi was officially chartered on February 23, 1975, at East Carolina University, and from that moment, the chapter became a beacon of what it means to uphold the values of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.—achievement in every field of human endeavor. The chapter’s chartering was sparked by a group of dedicated men with a vision to establish a lasting, impactful presence. These men, who would go on to become the charter members of Eta Psi, understood that their work would not only shape their college experience but would set the tone for the next 50 years of Brotherhood.

The chartering of Eta Psi began soon after, Brother Mebane established an interest group called Men Interested in Kappa (MIK), guiding these young men in their journey toward becoming the chapter’s first Brothers. Through the mentorship of Brother Mebane, who had crossed with the Rocky Mount Alumni Chapter in 1956, Eta Psi’s foundation was set.

On that fateful day in 1975, Eta Psi was officially chartered as the 85th chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The chapter’s first Polemarch, Brother Grover Cooper, and the leadership team, including Vice Polemarch Brother Talmage Fauntleroy, Keeper of Records Brother Thomas V. Lee, Keeper of Exchequer Brother James P. Clark, Strategus Brother Gene Thomas, and Historian Brother Richard Daniel, came together to create the structure that would guide Eta Psi through the decades. Brother Gene Thomas, also serving as Dean of Pledges, was instrumental in guiding the first line of initiates, helping to establish the chapter’s reputation for leadership and organizational excellence.

Eta Psi’s legacy is not just marked by its foundation but by its continuous commitment to excellence. Over the past 50 years, the chapter has become known as The Hospitality Chapter—a name chosen deliberately to reflect the values of Brotherhood that have always defined Eta Psi. In a world often divided by differences, Eta Psi stands out as a chapter where Brotherhood and camaraderie provide a welcoming space for all Brothers. The chapter’s focus on hospitality is more than just a name; it’s a guiding principle that has shaped how Brothers interact with each other, the broader campus community, and society at large.

Eta Psi’s impact is not limited to the walls of East Carolina University. The chapter’s members have gone on to make significant contributions in a wide range of fields, including business, law, healthcare, education, public service, and the arts. Their success in their respective careers is a testament to the foundation of leadership and commitment to excellence that was instilled in them through their involvement in Eta Psi. The chapter has served as a launchpad for men who have achieved great things not only for themselves but for the communities they serve.

The first 50 years of Eta Psi have been defined by an unwavering commitment to the ideals of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.—achievement in every field of human endeavor. The chapter has made its mark through service initiatives, community engagement, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Brothers of Eta Psi have not just excelled in their personal lives but have sought to uplift others along the way. They have demonstrated time and again that Brotherhood is not only about the relationships forged within the chapter but also about the work done beyond it to make a tangible impact on the world.

As we celebrate this golden year, the Eta Psi Chapter remains as committed as ever to its foundational values. The legacy of the chapter is not simply about reflecting on the past but about ensuring that the principles established by the chapter’s charter members continue to guide future generations. The next 50 years will be built upon the strength of this legacy, and Eta Psi will continue to be a symbol of excellence, unity, and service.

The 50th Anniversary of the Eta Psi Chapter is a celebration of Brotherhood, service, and achievement. It is a reflection of how far the chapter has come, the positive impact it has had on the lives of its members, and the communities it serves. As the chapter looks forward to the future, it does so with the knowledge that the foundation laid by the charter members continues to support and guide the work of the men who cross the chapter’s line. Here’s to 50 years of success, and to the many more to come.
